ABOUT

The populations of Atlantic salmon that occur in Portugal are extremely endangered. Their main threats are the construction of dams and other barriers to migration, inadequate fishing legislation, and climate changes and global warming consequences, that are especially prominent in Portugal, which represents the southern limit of the global distribution of this species. Based on this information, the University of Évora, with technical and logistic support from the MARE research centre, joined efforts with the professional and recreational fisherman community to develop the SalmonLink project. This partnership intends to increase the knowledge about this species and contribute to improve the management and conservation programs of salmon in Portugal.

SalmonLink is coordinated by the University of Évora, with the technical-scientific and logistic support from MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre. The project partners are VIANAPESCA, OP – Cooperativa de Produtores de Peixe de Viana do Castelo, Associação de Profissionais de Pesca do rio Minho e do Mar (APPRMM), and Associação Desportiva e cultural dos Jovens de Longos Vales (ADCJLV). It is financed by European Funds (FEAMP – European Fund for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries), more specifically by MAR2020 Operational Program.
