conservation and participatory management of Atlantic

salmon populations in Portugal

(MAR-01.03.02-FEAMP-0048)

HOW?

The main objective of the project is the establishment of a network of contacts and partnerships, at a national level, between scientists and commercial and recreational fishermen in areas where Atlantic salmon occurs, that allows to increase the knowledge of these populations and, at the same time, and in a context of constant transfer of knowledge between the parties, adapt the current fishing legislation to the conservation and management needs of this endangered species.

THE SALMONLINK PROJECT COMPRISES FOUR ACTIONS THAT AIM TO:

Action 1. Network between scientists and fishermen for the participatory management of atlantic salmon in Portugal.
Action3. Socioeconomic and cultural context of atlantic salmon fishing in Portugal and definition of sustainable alternative to its exploitation.
Action 2. Pilot study on the biology and ecology of national atlantic salmon population
Action4. Disclosure os results and transfer of knowledge

STUDY AREA

The SALMONLINK project focuses on those river basins where Atlantic salmon occurs in Portugal, namely the rivers Minho and Lima, where the main populations of this species occur, as well as the rivers Cávado and Douro, where the presence of this species is occasionally detected.

A map of the project's intervention area showing 4 blue zones, whitch are available habitat for the salmon. And unavailable habitats in red (after obstacles).
Area of intervention of the SALMONLINK project.
The map indicates the areas, below the first insurmountable obstacle, that are still available for this species in each river and, thus, will be mainly focused on the project actions.
