The 4 Actions

THE SALMONLINK PROJECT COMPRISES

FOUR ACTIONS THAT AIM TO:

Action 1. Network between scientists and fishermen for the participative management of Atlantic salmon in Portugal: The specific objectives of this action include the creation and consolidation of a network of partnerships between scientists and commercial and recreational fishermen operating in the project area, supported by public and private entities responsible for the management and exploitation of aquatic ecosystems and their fish resources, dedicated exclusively to the management and conservation of salmon populations in Portugal. This action includes meetings between the different partners for the creation and development of the network for the participatory management of salmon in Portugal, and the collection and management of abundance data of Atlantic salmon using surveys of commercial and recreational fishermen, including the accompanying of recreational and professional fishing days.
Action 2. Complementary study on the biology and ecology of national populations of Atlantic salmon: The aim of this action is to carry out a pilot study to collect baseline information on the biology and ecology of Atlantic salmon populations in Portugal in order to define the most appropriate management and conservation measures, as part of the partnerships between scientists, fishermen and other entities involved that will be created under this operation. Specifically, this study aims to: i)characterize the current distribution of salmon along the hydrographic basins where its occurrence is reported, and to identify its preferred habitats; ii) assess the population structure and diversity, and the genetic profile, of the national salmon populations and, at the same time, compare them with neighboring populations, namely those occurring in northern Spain; iii) characterize the migration patterns of Atlantic salmon in Portugal. The implementation of this action within SALMONLINK project will also enable the implementation of an information collection system on the state of Atlantic salmon populations in Portugal which will be maintained after the end of the operation.
Action 3. Socio-economic and cultural context of Atlantic salmon fishing in Portugal and definition of sustainable alternatives to its exploitation. The action 3 of the SALMONLINK project aims to assess the socio-economic and cultural context inherent to Atlantic salmon in Portugal and the associated commercial and recreational fishing activities, as well as to define sustainable alternatives to its exploitation. To achieve this goal, four tasks will be carried out: i) characterize the socio-economic and cultural profile of commercial and recreational fishermen who, intentionally or accidentally, include in their activity the species targeted by the project; ii) quantify the costs associated with these activities and, on the other hand, the possible socio-economic and/or cultural benefits for these fishermen arising from salmon fishing; iii) characterize the socio-economic and cultural importance that salmon has for other economic and cultural agents of the study area, with some kind of connection to fisheries and natural resources; iv) based on the information collected in this action, as well as in the other actions of the project, a set of valid alternatives will be proposed that allow making compatible the protection of national populations of Atlantic salmon, with the prosecution of a profitable fishing activity in economic and recreational terms.
